The news of his sudden death has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Matt was the beloved husband of Danielle (Grill) Engels and a devoted father to Lauren, Ben, and Patrick. He is also survived by his father, Bill Engels, his siblings Elizabeth (Craig) Engels and Michael (Marianne) Engels, as well as many cherished nephews, nieces, friends, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Engels.

Born on October 12, 1969, to Bill and Rita Engels, Matt grew up in a family that instilled in him a love for sports and a commitment to community. He attended St. Joseph High School and later continued his education at the University of Illinois, where he played as a catcher for the Illini baseball team and celebrated a memorable Big Ten championship. Matt’s enthusiasm for the Illini was not just a personal passion but a contagious fervor that he shared with everyone around him. His unwavering support for the team was a testament to his deep loyalty and genuine love for the game.

Known to many as “Coach Engels,” Matt took immense joy in sharing his knowledge and skills with young athletes. His patience, kindness, and enthusiasm made him a beloved mentor and friend to those who shared his passion for baseball. One of Matt’s fondest memories was a trip to Cleveland with his brother to witness the Chicago Cubs win the World Series—a moment he cherished and often recounted with great joy.

Matt was also known for his culinary talents, and his home was always open to friends and family for a meal and a good conversation. Whether he was in the kitchen perfecting a new recipe or simply enjoying time with loved ones, Matt’s presence was a source of warmth and comfort. He valued the simple pleasures of life and was always ready with a smile and a kind word.

Matt’s legacy is one of kindness, humor, and steadfast friendship. His life was marked by his dedication to his family, his love of sports, and his commitment to making the world a better place through his actions and relationships. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Visitation to honor Matt’s life will be held on Friday, July 26, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hallowell and James Funeral Home, located at 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside. A final viewing will take place at the same location at 9:00 AM on Saturday, July 27, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Cletus Catholic Church, located at 600 55th St., LaGrange. Interment will be private.
