The Sugar Kings of Elmira
A junior ice hockey team that plays their home games in Elmira, Ontario, Canada, is known as the Elmira Sugar Kings. Within the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, they compete in the Mid-Western division of the standings. Elmira Juniors were a team that competed at the Junior “C” level throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1962, they were victorious in the Clarence Schmalz Cup competition. The first season of the Elmira Sugar Kings was played in 1971–1972, although the Sugar Kings did not join the Southwestern Junior “B” Hockey League until 1973 with their first season. The Sugar Kings were victorious in the league championship competition during their debut Junior “B” season. In 1974, the league was renamed the Waterloo-Wellington Junior “B” Hockey League. In 1977, the league changed its name to the Midwestern “B” Hockey League.
Through much of their first 20 years, the Kings were inconsistent—some years finishing with more than 30 wins, some years fewer than 10. But the Sugar Kings were one of the most powerful teams in Canadian junior hockey throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. They were a squad that dominated competition. In 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2008, and 2011, the Kings were crowned the Mid-Western “B” champions. Additionally, they won the Sutherland Cup as the Ontario Hockey Association Junior B champions in 1997, 2001, 2011, and 2017.
